Stress causes our bodies’ natural coping mechanisms come alive in order to help us survive. When in a precarious situation, the body releases cortisol and epinephrine, which determine our response (fight or flight). In the ancient times (cavemen), stress related responses prevented us from being eaten by sabretooth tigers or stepped on by mammoths, now it helps us survive school assignments we waited till the last night before the due date to start, or with facing terrible bosses at the office. Whether you are studying for a class final, finishing an assignment for work, or just trying to get the kids to bed, stress affects each and every one of us on a daily basis.
Drinking too much caffeine can exacerbate the “stressed” condition causing the body to overreact, causing weight gain, headaches, tension, fatigue, illness and disease. Sometimes the stress is contained in a long day, much of the time it stretches much longer. Not only does a high amount of mental pressure wear down on the emotions, it physically burdens us as well. According to the American Institute of Stress, stress is the culprit for almost sixty percent of all ailments and diseases affecting humans. Long periods of stress can lead to weight gain, headaches (including migraines), pain in the neck and spine areas and increase in blood pressure. In those enduring long bouts of high stress, statistics show a forty percent increase in heart disease, a twenty five percent increase in heart attack risks, and a fifty percent increase in stroke risk. The pressure is literally killing us.
Seeking Relief in Chiropractic
There are many ways to relieve stress build up in the body. Regular exercise combined with drinking plenty of water and healthy eating keeps the body finely tuned and alert. Other avenues include music, nature, art, laughing or a combination of several. Many experts suggest the necessity of physical contact as a key to balancing the concerns and worries of the day. Now, while hugs may not be readily available throughout the day, massage is an opportunity that many of us would jump at. However, spending an hour of time on a massage table may not be an option for many, either in time or money, other avenues of relief may be available.
A simple alternative growing in popularity is chiropractic care. Generally, a chiropractic appointment lasts twenty minutes or less, which makes it an easier option to squeeze in during a busy day. But why is chiropractic care so important? It gets right to the source of the pain. Much of our tension is felt in the neck and shoulders and along the spine into the lower back (lumbar) and hips. Our nervous system is headquartered in these areas. When the spinal column is not properly aligned, the nerves cannot respond in the manner they are supposed to, reducing our abilities to cope with our environment. An aligned spine redistributes that pressure, reducing pressure on the nerves and providing a more alert attitude and increased productivity.
While chiropractic therapy is helpful, many experts recommend combining regular chiropractic sessions with other remedies such as deep tissue massage, supplement intake, intimacy with a partner, and exercise.
